Marine Corps Combat Fitness Test

The Marine Corps has recently introduced a Combat Fitness Test to compliment the existing Physical Fitness Test. The CFT measures your speed over a medium distance, upper and lower body strength, endurance, and overall physical toughness. Unlike the PFT, the CFT is done wearing combat boots and camoflauge utility uniform. You will run this test while at OCS and throughout your Marine Corps career, just like the PFT. Like the PFT, the CFT consists of three graded events.

The first event is an 880 meter run, called the Movement to Contact. This is a pretty simple idea, just run at a fast pace for two laps around a standard track. Men should set a goal of completing the run in 2 min 45 sec and women should work to achieve a 3 min 20 sec time. These may seem hard to reach, but they are absolutely attainable with the proper work ethic.

Next is the ammo can lift. Again, the idea is simple. All you have to do is pick up a 30 pound ammo can and raise it from below your chin until your arms are fully extended above your head as many times as possible within 2 minutes. Males should shoot for around 100 reps and females should ideally be able to do 60.

The last event is the Movement Under Fire. For this test, you will start out by sprinting, then low crawl, high crawl, run and weave between cones, drag and fireman's carry a person of your same body weight, sprint while carrying a 30 pound ammo can in each hand, throw a dummy grenade, and sprint through the finish while carrying the ammo cans. Don't worry right now about memorizing the exact course because every time you run the CFT, the course will be explained to you. The bottom line is that you will be running back and forth, so just go as fast as you can and you will be good to go.
