Ground

This is the backbone of the Marine Corps. When most people think of the Marines, this is what comes to mind, because there simply is no better fighting force in the world. We respond quickly with decisive strength and speed to anywhere in the world; we are America's 911 Force. Continuing that legacy as a ground officer will require you to act fast and think even faster. Whether you choose a combat arms or combat service support Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), your leadership abilities will be put to the test as you lead Marines in operations around the globe.

Lieutenants with ground contracts will attend The Basic School (TBS), along with every Marine officer, where they will master the skills necessary to become a provisional rifle platoon commander. When they have completed this phase of their training, they will attend a more specialized school that will teach them the skills specific to their MOS.

Upon the completion of their respective MOS schools, new lieutenants will be assigned to their first duty station. Most of these young men and women will become platoon commanders. In this billet they will have the opportunity to lead anywhere from 30 to 70 Marines, and in many cases millions of dollars worth of equipment. This is an opportunity for leadership, responsibility, and growth that is almost nonexistent in the civilian world at entry level positions.

The duty station of a new officer also offers exciting new horizons. There are major Marine installations in Hawaii, California, North Carolina, Florida, and Japan to name a few.

There are MOSes that will cater to almost any individual's skill set. Every MOS will challenge the individual, provide opportunities to build leadership experience, and hone the skills of the individual.
